In response to last week’s issue of the Stallion, Ruth’s Cottage asked for an informative follow-up. Ruth’s Cottage is a domestic violence shelter for women located in Tifton, Ga. Its mission is to help serve and protect women who have suffered from domestic violence.
Ruth’s Cottage says the more that people are educated, the easier it is to see and prevent future domestic violence. The shelter in Tifton can house up to 12 women per night. The shelter has been at full capacity for the last two months. Due to the increasing amount of shelter use and crisis calls, Ruth’s Cottage is trying to educate as many people as possible. If you are unsure if you or a friend is in an abusive relationship here are a few categories to consider.
Battery includes hitting, slapping, punching, pulling hair, biting, cutting, bruising, breaking bones, forcing sexual acts, throwing you against a wall or floor or shoving you with the intent of harming you. Assault includes threating you, trying to hit you but missing, shaking a fist in your face, holding back your arms in order to hit you, trying to run you over with a car, throwing things at you or showing you a gun in a threating way.
Stalking includes calling you without consent, following you, tailing you, sending harassing emails or texts, spying on you or making repeated unwanted phone calls. Unlawful restraint includes locking you into a room, not letting you leave a room or house, making you get into a car or making you drive somewhere you do not want to.
Property damage includes shredding of clothes, damaging your valuables, damaging your home or car, damaging your property, staying on your property after you have asked them to leave or them coming onto your property after you have asked them not to.
All of these things are signs and acts of domestic violence. As you read in last week’s issue, it can happen to anyone and it can happen to someone that you know. Do not be afraid to speak up. The legal advocates and employees at Ruth’s Cottage are here to help you.
If you have children especially they also offer the Patti cake house. The Patti cake house is specialized for children who suffer from domestic violence or whose mothers suffer from domestic violence and stay in the Ruth’s Cottage shelter. You can stop the hurt. Never be afraid to speak up.
