ABAC’s Ground Maintenance consists of nine employees and supervisors that keep the beauty of the campus maintained. Thirty-four acres at the Museum of Agriculture, seven and a half acres at Place, six areas at Lakeside and the area around the main campus are zoned out for the nine employees to handle each week.
The land artists work on everything that doesn’t touch the buildings, which includes irrigation, trees and shrubbery, insect and grass control, and more. Twenty-five hours a week are solely devoted to policing trash and cigarettes butts.
The crew really focuses on detail and creating a clean and proper presentation for ABAC campus. They work not just for a paycheck but because in the words of two staff members Bill Catazarita and Damien Lucas, “We love our boss Brad Barbee and we love the campus, staff and the students. We work hard so the campus will look the best it can.”
Going green is one of the many focuses of the Ground Maintenance staff and is in the process of reducing ABAC’s carbon footprint. Carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels. The department is in the process of changing all mowers to propane mowers that burn cleaner and release fewer pollutants.
Over the last five years, they’ve reduced our carbon footprint by 60 percent, which really is a huge deal for the environment and over-all cleanliness of the campus. Ground Maintenance has also put more carp into the Baldwin Lake to help reduce the algae and maintain the purity of the lake.
Students and staff can help out drastically with the Ground Maintenance by disposing trash and cigarette butts properly. Collectively students pay $200 minimum a week to the staff to pick up trash, which adds up to $10,000 a year. If we were to join our focus together it would help out our environment, reduce our carbon footprint, save money, and keep it clean.
“Nothing would help out more,” says Barbee. Everyone wins from keeping the environment and campus clean.
ABAC’s grounds are beautiful and well kept because of these dedicated and hardworking employees so let's make it easier for them and do our part to keep ABAC beautiful.
