Starbucks is coming to ABAC. In a recent meeting with Vice President of Operations, John Clements, he revealed that a “true” Starbucks is on the books.
Clements says it may be here as early as December. Clements met with Sodexo Inc. this week to plot a location, which could possibly be the library.
The task of bringing retailers onto campus is a great one. Clements says he must, essentially, “buy a franchise.”
However, everything goes through Sodexo Inc. Contracting amenities such as a coffee shop, or even the Pizza Hut on campus requires working through Sodexo. Clements says it is much more cost efficient for the school.
Clements also says Sodexo brings an air of expertise in certain areas, such as lawn care and dining. However, he laments the restriction that ABAC must go through an outside corporation to do such things.
He said that while some might want to bring Sodexo employees back under contract with ABAC, it would be imprudent economically. One matter that makes outsourcing prudent is health care costs. Clements says it would be very expensive to pay for the health care of all of the 100-plus employees currently under contract with Sodexo.
